About
The Sedgwick-Brooklin Historical Society
Incorporated in 1964, the Sedgwick-Brooklin Historical Society (SBHS) is dedicated to the preservation of the history and heritage of Sedgwick and Brooklin, Maine, two towns that were part of the original Sedgwick when it was incorporated in 1789. At the time, Sedgwick included what is now the Town of Brooklin. Sedgwick takes its name from Major Robert Sedgwick, who in 1654 captured nearby Fort Pentagoet (now Castine) from the French during his cruise along the coast.
Our Mission
Our mission is to collect, preserve, and exhibit data and material items that illustrate the customs and habits of the early settlers of the represented towns, to preserve the memory of those settlers and others who have contributed to the town histories, and to acquire, preserve, and protect historical sites in the two towns.
Sedgwick Historic District
We own and maintain three buildings on our primary campus in what was once the Sedgwick town center. The campus includes the land and home once owned by the Reverend Daniel Merrill, Sedgwick's first full-time minister. The Merrill House (c.1795) is our headquarters and main museum housing the town’s historic collections.
In addition to the minister's house, we also own a restored one-room schoolhouse and a barn built by members in 1985. A separate building holds two horse-drawn hearses owned by the town. These structures contain exhibits of historic interest to our community and visitors alike.
Across the road from the main campus is the Town Meetinghouse (c.1795), which served as the church until 1837 and today is still the town hall used for meetings and elections. A few paces away are the remains of the stone animal pound where stray animals, such as cows, sheep, and horses, were held until their owners picked them up. Behind the Town Meeting House is the Sedgwick Rural Cemetery where many of the early settlers and residents are buried.
These properties comprise the Sedgwick Historic District, which was placed on the Historic Register in 1995.
